The Open Group is a global consortium of more than 750 technology and industry organizations that seeks to achieve business objectives by developing open, vendor-neutral technology standards and certifications. For the oil and gas industry, The Open Group OSDU™ Forum provides a standard data platform to break down silos and offer the community secure and reliable global access to all subsurface and well data.
AspenTech Subsurface Science and Engineering (SSE) is committed to the success of the OSDU global initiative. Its main goal is for the OSDU data platform to support multi-disciplinary integrated reservoir workflows, from interpretation and geomodeling to flow simulation. As one of the earliest software providers to join the group in 2018, SSE is a major contributor of code and subject matter expertise to the OSDU Reservoir Data Management Forum.
Both our existing and next-generation portfolios will be connected to OSDU, from desktop to cloud native.

Accessing Wells and Seismic Data in OSDU
Well Data in OSDU
AspenTech SSE's industry-standard Geolog application is registered in the OSDU catalog, and can consume and ingest well data from OSDU.
Geolog 20 was our first release with connectivity to OSDU R1, and Geolog 21 has updated and expanded this to provide read-write connectivity to OSDU R3. Geolog 21 is able to search the wells present in an OSDU instance and load any user selected data for display, editing and processing within Geolog. When new data has been created in Geolog – e.g. the output of a petrophysical analysis or a new electrofacies model – this can be written back to the OSDU instance, making it available to any other applications or users who have the relevant access rights. Geolog also offers the option of adding accompanying PDF reports or images of log data, making it easier to visually check data contents of wells from our web-based search tool.

Seismic Data in OSDU
The SSE seismic interpretation suite can consume and ingest OSDU poststack seismic volumes in OpenVDS format. Seismic volumes can be directly streamed from the OSDU platform, avoiding seismic data duplication. New volumes are created in Epos native format and ingested in the OpenVDS standard into OSDU.
The demo shows a combined workflow for petrophysicists and seismic interpreters, which directly uses seismic and well data stored in OSDU (run on AWS OSDU instance). This includes the ability to connect SSE solutions seamlessly to the deliverables of other applications, including those from other vendors. Specifically, it shows how well data, loaded from OSDU, can be classified using a machine learning approach, and then used to guide the prediction of rock properties using seismic data streamed from OSDU. Finally, resulting electrofacies logs and classified seismic volumes are saved back into the OSDU data platform for use by other applications.

Reservoir Initiative Management and Code Contribution
Our contribution improves the efficiency of reservoir modelers and reservoir engineers, and supports multi-disciplinary integrated reservoir workflows, including geomodeling and flow simulation, on top of the OSDU platform.
Reservoir data definition
In collaboration with operators and software vendors, AspenTech SSE is leading OSDU metadata definition for the reservoir domain. This track aims at defining reservoir information for indexing and searching data on the cloud platform.
Reservoir DDMS code contribution
We have contributed code for the Reservoir Domain Data Management Service to OSDU (in September 2021). Reservoir DDMS allows ingesting, storing and consuming reservoir data generated in the RESQML open data standard for Earth Modeling. Data are stored in a relational database.

Reservoir DDMS uses RESQMLTM data standard from Energistics. RESQML is a mature standard which allows an open description of reservoir data, capturing complex earth model data relationships and associated metadata.
Data types covered
Reservoir DDMS allows storing the full content of RESQML files, including data and meta-data. Below is a non-exhaustive list of data types covered:
- Faults: Sticks, polygons, pointset, triangulated surfaces
- Horizons: 2D grid map, pointsets, triangulated surfaces
- Reservoir grids: Corner-point, fully unstructured, semi-structured
- Associated properties
- Continuous, Discrete, Categorical
- Vectorial and time-dependent
- Geological context
- Feature type and interpretation type
- Model level organization: Structure, stratigraphy
- Wells association: Well markers, blocked wells, checkshots.
- Seismic association: Picking information
SSE's Reservoir DDMS open source code contribution contains an Open ETP* Server in C++ which communicates with the relational backend database. It contains a list of domain libraries, such as ETP APIs and RESQML file I/O library in C++ and REST APIs in typescript.
