J. Kim McLean, Head of Formation Evaluation and Drilling at North America Emerson, E&P Software, will be the featured speaker at the June Webinar Series held by the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA). The Webinar, "Integrated Petrophysical Interpretation to Unlock Unconventional Reservoirs", will be offered to registered members of SPWLA free of charge.
For the participants' convenience, two identical sessions are offered:
- Tuesday, June 1st, 6pm – 7pm CT
- Wednesday, June 2nd, 9am – 10am CT

Shale reservoirs are heterogeneous by nature, with facies that differ in mineralogy and geomechanical properties. We present a workflow that evaluates the mineralogy and geomechanical rock properties of a pilot well, and use the resulting logs as part of a machine learning workflow to identify our sweet spot facies in terms of original oil in place, mineralogy and mechanical properties. We then use this information to help optimally place a lateral well such that it leads to better placement within the reservoir sweet spot.
Kim received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Orleans before carrying on to Central Washington University where she studied the structural geology of the Tien Shan in Kyrgyzstan for her master’s thesis. After receiving her MSc, Kim entered the energy industry, and now has over 15 years of experience under her belt. In her professional career, she worked at Halliburton, and Paradigm before spending two years at BP as the petrohpysicist for the Pike Asset team in Calgary.
Kim rejoined Paradigm, now Emerson, in 2016 as part of the Global Experts Team and relocated to Houston in 2018. In 2020, Kim became the team lead of the Formation Evaluation and Drilling technical team for North America.
