Subsurface Modeling

Unique volume-based modeling.

In oil and gas exploration and production, state-of-the-art 3D modeling and construction of 3D grids is similar among competing applications: The conventional technique for constructing a model is pillar-based. Unfortunately, in environments containing Y faults or oblique faults, pillar-based construction requires modifications of the fault geometry and/or removal from the model, causing a mismatch between the structural and reservoir model and the interpretation.

The AspenTech Subsurface Science & Engineering (SSE) subsurface modeling solution is based on the SKUA™ modeling platform, which itself is based on the UVT Transform algorithm. SKUA revolutionizes the world of subsurface modeling by greatly streamlining the creation of a consistent structural and stratigraphic model without simplifying the fault network and/or stratigraphic elements.

Once a SKUA model is constructed, many different analyses can be performed, including:

  • Faults
    • Displacement maps
    • Fault juxtaposition maps
    • Fault shale-gouge ratio and weighted shale-gouge ratio on faults
  • Volumetrics:
    • 3D consistent structural maps
    • Spill points
    • Volumetric uncertainty
    • Layer deformation
  • Deformation of the layers, strain and stress
  • Probability of fracturing and directions of fractures

SKUA modeling can be applied at reservoir or basin scale:

  • The SKUA 3D gridding module enables the construction of special grids for basin modeling. Basin modeling grids differ from reservoir flow simulation grids in that cell faces should match the fault plane.
  • SKUA with Kine3D-3™ enables the sequential restoration of the basin grids from the present date to the depositional time.
